Ten-year-old Robin Räikkönen, son of Formula 1 legend Kimi “Iceman” Räikkönen, saw his hard-fought victory slip away in heartbreaking style at the Rotax Max Challenge International Trophy Asia in Thailand — all while his father and family watched on.

Robin, racing under a Swiss license after winning the Micro Max Swiss championship in 2024, was on extraordinary form at the Bira Circuit — setting the third-fastest qualifying time and finishing a close second in Heat 1 behind local favorite Poomsit Klombunjong. In the Super Heat, he again showcased his skill by claiming fourth place.
The decisive final began with Robin starting from P2 on the front row, fully in contention for victory. However, misfortune struck early when he was pushed wide by a rival, costing him momentum and allowing others to surge ahead. Robin fought through the field but ultimately crossed the line in eighth place, far from the top spot he had earned.
Displaying impressive maturity, Robin took to Instagram with a calm reflection on the incident:
“Started P 2 and got pushed wide, finished P 8. Not the end result we wanted after a very strong and fast weekend. Thanks Thailand! It was a great new experience!” ()
Kimi Räikkönen was in attendance at the race, supporting his son through every twist and turn. It marked a poignant moment for the former F1 champion, now focusing on his family’s racing future after stepping away from top-level motorsport.
Robin’s karting journey has been rich with promise — he secured the 2024 Swiss Micro Max title with a remarkable comeback drive in wet conditions, moving from 22nd to 12th on the first lap before finishing fifth (promoted to fourth post-penalties) (oversteer48.com). With experience now gained at the international level, his karting career is undoubtedly one to watch.
Despite the setback, Robin’s performance in Thailand reveals a young talent already accustomed to pressure and disappointment. With backing from his father and a growing resume of regional successes, he’s likely to continue making waves in karting — and perhaps beyond.
For Kimi and his family, this rollercoaster weekend may have reinforced both the heartbreak and thrill of racing life. And while a victory was taken away, the foundation of a champion is being built.
Kimi Räikkönen’s next chapter may be quieter — but Robin’s might just be getting loud.
