Vanessa Bryant Faces Criticism from Dr. Umar Johnson Over Kobe’s $600 Million Estate
Vanessa Bryant, widow of NBA legend Kobe Bryant, is facing criticism from psychologist and activist Dr. Umar Johnson, who publicly accused her of not using Kobe’s estimated $600 million estate to benefit the Black community. Johnson’s comments were made during an appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast in December 2023, where he expressed disappointment that Kobe’s legacy wasn’t being utilized to uplift Black institutions and causes.

Johnson’s criticism focused on the Mamba Program, a sports initiative launched in 2023 through a partnership between Vanessa Bryant and Nike. The program selected six universities for collaboration, including Duke, UConn, and LSU — all predominantly white institutions. Johnson condemned the absence of any Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), arguing that it demonstrated a disregard for the community that, in his view, supported Kobe throughout his career.
The accusations sparked a wave of responses across social media. Many fans and public figures rushed to Vanessa’s defense, pointing to her philanthropic work through the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation, which supports underserved youth in sports and education — including many Black children. In a notable act of generosity, Vanessa donated her entire $16 million settlement from a lawsuit against Los Angeles County to the foundation.
Critics of Johnson questioned the validity of his claims and highlighted his own controversial fundraising efforts, including unfulfilled promises related to an educational institution he had pledged to build.

Supporters of Vanessa argue she has the right to honor her husband’s legacy in her own way and that her efforts have already had a meaningful impact across various communities. The debate continues to raise broader questions about wealth, legacy, and the expectations placed on high-profile individuals to serve specific communities aftertragedy.
