In a moment that fused national pride, hometown nostalgia, and a dash of Kimi Räikkönen’s trademark understated charm, the Municipality of Espoo today unveiled a giant bronze statue depicting one of Formula 1’s most iconic images: “The Champagne Celebration… Without a Smile.” The tribute, located prominently in the heart of the Tapiola area of Espoo City Centre, immortalises the city’s most famous racing son in a way that feels distinctly Finnish — understated, authentic, and utterly unforgettable.
The larger-than-life sculpture captures Räikkönen in a moment etched into the minds of motorsport fans worldwide: standing on the top step of the podium, champagne bottle in hand, expressionless as the victory celebrations erupted around him. It’s an image that perfectly encapsulates the “Iceman” persona — a driver whose focus, discipline, and cool-headedness made him not only one of the sport’s most entertaining personalities but also one of its most formidable competitors.
A Fitting Tribute to a National Icon
Espoo Mayor Jukka Mäkelä led the ceremony, attended by hundreds of residents, motorsport fans, and dignitaries. “Kimi Räikkönen is not just a champion in Formula 1 — he is a symbol of Finnish resilience, individuality, and excellence on the world stage,” Mäkelä said. “This statue is not just about victories; it’s about attitude. It’s about showing the world that we Finns celebrate success in our own way.”
The unveiling comes almost two decades after Räikkönen clinched his Formula 1 World Championship in 2007 with Ferrari, and nearly three years after his retirement from the sport in 2021. Yet, his legacy has continued to grow. Known for his blunt humour, no-nonsense approach, and remarkable driving skill, Räikkönen has remained one of Finland’s most beloved sporting exports, alongside the likes of Mika Häkkinen and Valtteri Bottas.
Choosing Tapiola as the statue’s location was deliberate. The district is considered one of Espoo’s cultural and commercial hubs, symbolising progress, community, and pride — values the municipality believes align with Räikkönen’s journey from a quiet Finnish upbringing to global fame. Situated near the Espoo Cultural Centre and visible from the bustling pedestrian plaza, the statue is expected to draw both locals and international visitors.
Sculptor Elina Vainio, who spent over a year working on the piece, described the challenge of capturing Räikkönen’s personality in metal. “The hardest part wasn’t the technical detail — it was capturing his essence,” Vainio explained. “Kimi’s face is famously hard to read, but in that lack of expression lies all the emotion you need. It’s a celebration that only Kimi could pull off, and I wanted to make sure the statue conveyed that perfectly.”
The statue stands over 3.5 meters tall and is mounted on a granite base engraved with some of Räikkönen’s most memorable quotes, including the fan-favourite, “Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing.”
Long-time fans travelled from across Finland and even abroad to witness the unveiling. Many wore vintage Ferrari and Alfa Romeo team gear, waving Finnish flags as they reminisced about Räikkönen’s most thrilling races. “This is perfect,” said Mikko Laine, a fan from Tampere. “Other drivers pop champagne and dance. Kimi just stood there, and somehow, that made it even cooler.”
In true Räikkönen fashion, the man of the hour kept his speech short and typically deadpan. “It’s a nice statue. I guess it’s okay,” he said, drawing laughter and applause from the crowd. He thanked the city for the honour and added, “I suppose it’s better than having no statue at all.”
The Municipality of Espoo hopes the statue will serve as a lasting reminder of the city’s contribution to the world of motorsport and inspire future generations to pursue their passions — whether in racing, art, or beyond. Plans are already in place to incorporate the statue into guided tours and annual motorsport-themed events in the city.
