Vanessa Bryant Declines $150 Million Nike Extension Over Legacy Concerns
In a heartfelt and surprising move, Vanessa Bryant, widow of NBA legend Kobe Bryant, revealed she had no interest in extending a $150 million contract with Nike due to concerns over how the company was managing Kobe’s legacy. The decision, which sent shockwaves through the sports and business communities, was rooted in Vanessa’s desire to protect and honor her late husband’s memory.
The original Nike deal, which expired on April 13, 2021, had played a pivotal role in building the Kobe Bryant brand during and after his career. However, Vanessa voiced disappointment over the lack of accessibility to Kobe’s merchandise—particularly for fans and younger athletes. She criticized Nike for making Kobe’s products difficult to obtain, often releasing them in limited quantities and failing to include children’s sizes.
“My hope will always be to allow Kobe’s fans to get and wear his products,” Vanessa said in a statement. “I will continue to fight for that.”
The Bryant estate had also been seeking a “lifetime” deal similar to those granted to NBA legends like Michael Jordan and LeBron James. However, negotiations with Nike reportedly did not meet those expectations. As a result, the Bryant family opted not to move forward.
Despite the split, Vanessa and Nike later reached a new agreement in March 2022. The renewed partnership includes plans to release Kobe and Gigi Bryant-branded sneakers, with all proceeds from Gigi’s shoes benefiting the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation. Additionally, a youth basketball center is being developed in Southern California to teach and inspire the next generation through the “Mamba Mentality.”
Vanessa’s stand underscores her unwavering commitment to preserving Kobe’s legacy—not through profit, but through purpose.
