Kawhi Leonard Expected to Remain Clippers’ Cornerstone Over the Next Three Years
Despite recent injury setbacks and playoff disappointments, Kawhi Leonard is expected to remain the cornerstone of the Los Angeles Clippers for the next three years. The 33-year-old superstar, who signed a three-year, $153 million contract extension in January 2024, is viewed by the organization as the face of the franchise through the 2026–27 season.

Leonard missed the start of the 2024–25 NBA season due to knee inflammation but returned to deliver strong performances, including a standout 39-point game in the playoffs. However, the Clippers’ postseason run ended in disappointment, falling to the Denver Nuggets in the first round, marking their third consecutive early exit.
Despite this, Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank recently confirmed the team’s commitment to both Leonard and James Harden, who are expected to return next season. Frank emphasized that Leonard’s leadership, defensive prowess, and playoff experience continue to make him the centerpiece of the team’s strategy moving forward.
There are, however, growing concerns regarding Leonard’s durability. With age and recurring injuries starting to weigh on his performance, questions have been raised about whether he can continue to play at an elite level deep into his 30s. The Clippers are reportedly exploring ways to strengthen their supporting cast and develop younger talent that could eventually carry more of the load.

Still, Leonard’s presence on the court brings a significant impact on both ends, and when healthy, he remains one of the league’s most dominant two-way players. As the Clippers look to break through in the ultra-competitive Western Conference, the next three years will be pivotal in determining if Leonard can lead them to their first-ever NBA championship—or if it’s time to pass the torch.
