Baseball Mourns the Loss of Esteemed Coach and Manager Nick Leyva
The baseball community is in mourning following the passing of Nick Leyva, a respected former manager and coach, who died on March 3, 2025, at the age of 71. Leyva’s extensive career in Major League Baseball (MLB) spanned several decades, during which he made significant contributions to the sport.
Born on August 16, 1953, in Ontario, California, Nicholas Tomas Leyva began his baseball journey as an infielder. He was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 24th round of the 1975 amateur draft and played three seasons in the minor leagues, achieving a .267 batting average with eight home runs over 253 games.
Transitioning from player to manager, Leyva started his managerial career in 1978 with the Johnson City Cardinals, a rookie-level affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. His leadership skills quickly became evident, leading to coaching positions with the major league team from 1984 to 1988. During this period, he served as the first base coach for the National League champion Cardinals in 1985 and as the third base coach in 1987.
In 1989, Leyva was appointed manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. Over two full seasons, he guided the team to a sixth-place finish in his first year and a fourth-place finish in his second. Despite a challenging start to the 1991 season, which led to his departure, Leyva’s tenure with the Phillies was marked by his dedication and passion for the game.
Leyva’s coaching career continued with notable stints, including serving as the third base coach for the Toronto Blue Jays from 1993 to 1997, during which the team secured back-to-back World Series championships in 1993. He also held coaching positions with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2007 and returned to the Blue Jays in 2008. In 2011, he joined the Pittsburgh Pirates as their third base coach, further solidifying his reputation as a knowledgeable and respected figure in baseball.
Beyond his professional achievements, Leyva was known for his mentorship and ability to connect with players, fostering both their athletic and personal growth. His commitment to the sport extended internationally, as he managed teams in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, leading the Cardenales de Lara to a championship in the 2000-2001 season.
