Kawhi Leonard Reacts to Gregg Popovich Stepping Down as Spurs Head Coach
Kawhi Leonard has broken his silence following the news that legendary San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is stepping down after nearly three decades at the helm. Leonard, who played under Popovich from 2011 to 2018 and won an NBA championship with the Spurs in 2014, offered heartfelt words of appreciation and respect for his former coach.

“He had a phenomenal career,” Leonard said when asked about Popovich’s retirement. “He coached until pretty much he couldn’t, in a sense. It shows how much dedication he had to the game, how much he loved the game, and how much he gave to the game.”
Popovich, known for his tough love, basketball IQ, and leadership, played a pivotal role in shaping Leonard’s early years in the NBA. Under Pop’s guidance, Leonard evolved into one of the league’s premier two-way players, eventually earning Finals MVP honors during their championship run.
“I appreciate everything he’s done for me,” Leonard added. “Coming into the league, he helped build my foundation and showed me how to win. I want to congratulate him on his career and just want him to stay healthy.”
Popovich’s retirement marks the end of a historic coaching era that included five NBA championships and over 1,300 regular-season wins. While he is stepping down from the bench, he will remain with the Spurs in a front-office role, continuing to shape the franchise’s future.

Leonard’s tribute is a powerful reminder of the deep impact Popovich has had on his players—not just as athletes, but as individuals. Their shared legacy, defined by discipline, growth, and success, remains one of the most respected player-coach relationships in recent NBA history.
