The 2023 Detroit Tigers will look a bit different, but not the roster.
The 2023 Detroit Tigers coaching staff was announced on Wednesday, with few returning as an overhaul was due. The Tigers had a record of 66-96 during the 2022 season so changes were coming. How will the new coaching staff handle the pressure of the new season?
The coaching staff is as follows: manager A.J. Hinch, pitching coach Chris Fetter, hitting coaches Michael Brdar and Keith Beauregard, third base coach Gary Jones, Assistant hitting coach James Rowson, First base coach Alfredo Amezaga, Assistant pitching coaches Juan Nieves and Robin Lund, bench coach is George Lombard, and catching coach is Tim Federowicz. Returning are Hinch, Lombard, Fetter, Nieves, and Jones.
The complete overhaul of the staff was necessary as the Tigers struggled mightily last season, especially on offense. The pitching staff of the Detroit Tigers was quite good, posting an ERA of 4.04, good for 21st in the league.
The new coaching staff does come with a mixed bag. On one hand, there are 35 years of playing experience spread between six coaches. On the other hand, six other coaches, mostly new to the staff, have zero Major League Baseball playing experience. Will that play a role in the Tigers and who they will play? We shall see.
