Blue Jays Make a Splash: Anthony Santander Joins Toronto Amidst Guerrero Jr. Contract Standoff
The Toronto Blue Jays have signed Venezuelan All-Star outfielder Anthony Santander to a five-year, $92.5 million contract. This significant acquisition comes as the team faces uncertainty regarding the future of star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who recently failed to reach a contract extension with the club.
Santander, 30, is coming off a career-best season with the Baltimore Orioles, where he achieved personal highs of 44 home runs and 102 RBIs, earning his first All-Star selection in 2024. Over his eight-year tenure with the Orioles, he has maintained a batting line of .246/.307/.469, amassing 155 home runs and 435 RBIs. The Blue Jays structured his contract with $61.75 million in deferred payments, reducing its present-day value to $68.6 million.

The addition of Santander aims to bolster Toronto’s offensive lineup, especially in light of Guerrero Jr.’s unresolved contract situation. Despite the team’s efforts, Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays did not reach an agreement on a contract extension before his self-imposed deadline. This development has fueled speculation about his future with the franchise, with some projections suggesting potential trades, including a one-for-one swap with the New York Mets for right-handed pitcher Brandon Sproat.
In addition to Santander, the Blue Jays have been active this offseason, acquiring second baseman Andrés Giménez from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for Spencer Horwitz and Nick Mitchell. Giménez, an All-Star and Gold Glove winner in 2022, brings defensive prowess and a solid bat to Toronto’s infield.
These strategic moves reflect the Blue Jays’ commitment to remaining competitive in the American League East, addressing both current uncertainties and future aspirations. As the 2025 season approaches, Toronto’s revamped roster aims to make a significant impact, with fans eagerly anticipating how these new additions will perform on the field.
