Espoo, Finland — The quiet Finnish city of Espoo was anything but quiet today as crowds gathered for a historic and emotional unveiling — the world’s first living bronze monument dedicated to Kimi Räikkönen, Finland’s most iconic Formula 1 driver and one of the sport’s most enigmatic figures.
The breathtaking statue, titled “The Iceman Eternal,” stands at an imposing 3.2 meters high and weighs over two tons. It depicts Räikkönen in his signature stance — calm, composed, and contemplative — holding his helmet in one hand and gazing toward the horizon. The sculpture’s creator, renowned Finnish artist Aarne Laakso, revealed that the work took over 27 months to design and forge. What makes it unique is the innovative “living bronze” material, a heat-reactive alloy that subtly shifts in color depending on the weather — symbolizing the emotional contrast of Räikkönen’s career: cold on the outside, fire on the inside.
When the curtain dropped and sunlight gleamed off the polished bronze, the crowd erupted in applause, many waving Finnish flags and Ferrari caps. Plans are also in motion to open a small café nearby named “Keep It Cool,” inspired by Kimi’s legendary catchphrase: “Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing.”
In an emotional closing moment, a children’s choir performed a Finnish rendition of “We Are the Champions,” while the crowd waved candles and racing flags. The bronze Kimi stood still — eternal, unyielding, just as he was on the track.
