When asked whether the sport misses characters like Räikkönen, Verstappen responded with a smirk:
“Who cares, right? I mean, he had his time. It’s always the same questions. He was great, but he’s gone now. Life goes on.”
The response, while classic Verstappen in tone, sparked immediate debate online, with fans and pundits torn between admiration for Max’s honesty and disappointment over the perceived disrespect.
Kimi Räikkönen, affectionately known as The Iceman, remains one of the most beloved figures in modern Formula 1 history. With his dry wit, radio gold (“Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing”), and raw driving talent, Räikkönen carved out a unique space in the sport during his two-decade-long career.
The 2007 World Champion retired in 2021 with 21 wins, 103 podiums, and a cult-like fan following. Despite being a man of few words, Räikkönen’s presence — both on and off the grid — left a lasting impression on fans and fellow drivers alike.
So for Verstappen to suggest the Finn isn’t worth missing? For many, it felt a little too icy.

Verstappen’s dismissive tone could be a reflection of a broader shift in Formula 1. Today’s drivers — from Norris and Piastri to Leclerc and Russell — are products of a highly optimized, media-savvy, simulator-driven generation. The days of F1 being a wild, rebellious circus full of unpredictable personalities may be slowly fading.
Kimi belonged to that old world — a quieter, less filtered time. And Verstappen? He’s the embodiment of F1’s present: fast, relentless, and focused.
Max Verstappen’s “Who cares?” comment may come off as brash, but it’s nothing new for a driver known for straight talk over sentimental soundbites. Whether you agree or not, his perspective is consistent with the ruthless, forward-thinking mindset that has brought him so much success.
And as for Kimi Räikkönen? He’s probably somewhere in Switzerland, sipping coffee, watching his son kart, and caring very little about the noise.
Because if there’s one person who would’ve laughed off Max’s remark — it’s The Iceman himself.
