In a candid and heartfelt revelation, Lewis Hamilton has opened up about the complex “love-hate” relationship he shared with Finnish Formula 1 legend Kimi Räikkönen during their overlapping careers. The seven-time world champion described Räikkönen as “one of the most enigmatic drivers of our era” and admitted that their on-track clashes and contrasting personalities made for a dynamic mix of rivalry and respect.
Speaking during a recent media event, Hamilton didn’t hold back as he reminisced about the early days of his F1 career, when Räikkönen was already an established name. “Kimi was the guy I looked up to when I was entering Formula 1,” Hamilton said. “But man, he was tough. He wouldn’t say much off track, but when the lights went out, you knew you were in a fight.”
Their battles were often intense, sometimes even controversial. From their wheel-to-wheel duels to the famous incident at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix where Hamilton rear-ended Räikkönen in the pit lane, the history between the two is peppered with moments that defined a generation of racing fans.
But Hamilton was quick to point out that behind the stoic Iceman persona, there was a depth to Räikkönen that few ever got to see. “I think I misunderstood him at first,” Hamilton admitted. “He was blunt, didn’t talk much, didn’t play political games in the paddock—but over time, I learned to appreciate that honesty.”
The Briton also revealed that his admiration for Räikkönen only grew after the Finn’s return to the sport in 2012 following a brief stint in rallying. “Most people don’t understand how hard it is to come back to Formula 1 and still be competitive. Kimi did that—and on his own terms.”
Their mutual respect was evident in their final years racing together, with Hamilton often praising Räikkönen’s racecraft and consistency. Off the track, the two shared a quiet camaraderie that surprised many. “It’s funny, because we’re so different,” Hamilton laughed. “I’m more expressive, he’s super low-key. But somehow, we got along better as time went on.”
Now that Räikkönen has retired from Formula 1, Hamilton reflected on their relationship with a sense of nostalgia. “It was love-hate, yeah, but that’s what competition is. He pushed me, and I hope I pushed him too. There’s no one else like Kimi in this sport.”
In an era defined by fierce rivalries and fast-changing friendships, the unique bond between Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen stands as a reminder of the gritty, unscripted human stories that underpin the high-speed world of Formula 1.
