In true “Iceman” fashion, Kimi Räikkönen has once again delivered a moment of deadpan comedy — this time recounting a hilariously awkward situation that unfolded when Ferrari approached him with an offer to become their Team Ambassador following his retirement.
During a lighthearted interview on a Finnish podcast earlier this week, the 2007 Formula 1 World Champion shared the story with his signature dry wit and brutal honesty, leaving fans in stitches.
“They thought I’d say yes…”
“One day I got this call. It was someone from Ferrari,” Kimi began. “They said, ‘Kimi, we have an offer. We want you to be our Team Ambassador.’ I thought they were joking, so I hung up.”
That wasn’t a punchline. He actually did hang up.
“They called back and said, ‘No, no, we’re serious.’ I said, ‘You want me… to smile and talk to people? Did you call the wrong number?’”
Laughter erupted in the podcast studio, and online fans immediately started circulating memes. The thought of Kimi — known for his minimalist answers and general disdain for media obligations — being the face of Ferrari’s promotional efforts was comedic gold.
The irony of Ferrari approaching Räikkönen for an ambassadorial role wasn’t lost on the man himself.
“When I was racing, I did my media duties because I had to. Not because I liked it. Most of the time I was thinking about when I could go home and be left alone,” he quipped. “Now they want me to do more of that in retirement?”
According to Kimi, the Ferrari representative even tried sweetening the offer by telling him he could choose which events to attend.
“They said, ‘Don’t worry, Kimi, you can pick the events. You’ll just need to smile a bit, shake some hands.’ I told them, ‘My face doesn’t smile just because you say so. It’s not a robot.’”
Though Räikkönen declined the formal ambassador role — no surprise there — he did agree to make occasional appearances for Ferrari, provided they involve “minimum small talk, maximum coffee.”
“I told them, ‘If you need me to drive an old car or wave at the crowd from a balcony for five minutes, fine. But if I have to give 10 interviews in a row about how great the car looks, I’m out.’”
Social media exploded with reactions, with fans dubbing the tale “Peak Iceman.” One user wrote, “Kimi being offered a PR job is like asking a cat to give a TED Talk.” Others praised Ferrari for at least trying, joking that Räikkönen as a Team Ambassador would be the most entertaining PR move in F1 history.
Even former teammate Sebastian Vettel reportedly texted Kimi after hearing the story: “You missed a golden chance to confuse sponsors with silence.”
Despite his resistance to being the face of the team, Räikkönen’s bond with Ferrari remains strong. He remains the last driver to win a World Championship with the team (2007), and fans still chant his name at circuits around the world.
“I love Ferrari,” Kimi concluded. “But I love my peace and quiet more. That’s the real ambassador life.”
