Formula 1 icon Kimi Räikkönen has tested positive for COVID-19 and will not take part in this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, Alfa Romeo Racing has confirmed.
The 2007 World Champion returned a positive result in the routine testing conducted ahead of the race weekend. According to the team, Räikkönen is isolating at his hotel and is currently experiencing mild symptoms.
“Kimi is currently displaying no serious symptoms and is in good spirits,” read a statement from Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen.
“He has immediately entered isolation in accordance with FIA protocols and local health authority guidelines.”
In Räikkönen’s absence, reserve driver Robert Kubica will step into the cockpit of the Alfa Romeo C41 for Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s race. It will be Kubica’s first Grand Prix start since Abu Dhabi in 2019.
“Robert has been on standby all season and is fully prepared to race,” said Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur.
“We are confident in his experience and ability to step in at short notice.”
The news comes at an emotional time, as Räikkönen had recently announced his retirement from Formula 1 at the end of the season. The Dutch GP at Zandvoort was expected to be one of his last public appearances as an active driver.
Fans had eagerly anticipated his participation at the historic circuit’s return to the calendar, but his absence has now added an unexpected twist to his farewell tour.

The FIA and Formula 1 continue to enforce rigorous COVID-19 safety measures, including frequent testing, strict paddock access control, and isolation guidelines. This marks one of the few positive tests in the 2021 season.
“Our priority is Kimi’s health and safety,” the FIA said in a short statement.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and have full confidence in Alfa Romeo’s management of the case.”
Despite his famously reserved public persona, fans from around the world have taken to social media to send warm messages of support to the “Iceman.”

Assuming a smooth recovery and clearance from medical authorities, Räikkönen could return to racing in time for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza the following week, pending negative test results and symptom resolution.
This is a developing story. More updates to follow as Alfa Romeo and the FIA release further information.
