In true “Iceman” fashion, Kimi Räikkönen has made it clear: the role of a Formula 1 media personality is not for him. In a brief but telling comment made during a closed-door appearance at a motorsport business forum in Helsinki, the 2007 World Champion confirmed that he is exploring an advisory role within Formula One Management (FOM)—but will not be joining the TV pundit crowd anytime soon.
“It really requires too many interviews,” Räikkönen remarked bluntly, when asked about rumors linking him to a commentary or broadcast role with F1TV or Sky Sports.
“I’ve done my share of that. Now I’d rather do something useful… and quieter.”
While many former drivers take the media route post-retirement—offering hot takes and trackside analysis—Räikkönen’s no-nonsense personality has always made that transition seem unlikely. Still adored by fans and respected in the paddock, Kimi is now eyeing a role that aligns more with his strengths: insight, integrity, and independence.
Sources close to the situation say Kimi has already had informal discussions with FOM about serving as either:
- A Formula 1 Ambassador, representing the sport at select global events, or
- A Special Adviser to the CEO, helping guide strategic development, youth engagement, and sustainability initiatives behind the scenes.
“He’s not looking for a public-facing role,” one insider said. “But if it’s about shaping the sport’s future without being front and center, he’s very much interested.”
Kimi’s experience—21 seasons in F1, multiple teams, a world title, and stints with both Ferrari and Sauber—makes him a goldmine of racing knowledge. Yet, unlike typical ambassadors who thrive on the spotlight, Räikkönen would bring an authentic, minimalist approach.
He’s also seen as an ideal liaison between modern F1’s business machine and the gritty, purist racing values fans often feel are fading.
F1 broadcasters reacted with both humor and admiration to Kimi’s comments. Sky F1’s Martin Brundle quipped:
“That’s Kimi for you. He gives us one sentence, and it says more than most press releases.”
Meanwhile, fans online applauded his consistency. One fan wrote on X:
“The most Kimi thing ever: turns down a job for having too many interviews. Legend.”
While nothing official has been signed, it’s expected that FOM may create a flexible ambassadorial role tailored to Kimi’s preferences. This could include:
- Appearances at heritage Grand Prix events
- Consulting on future regulations
- Mentoring young drivers and engaging with F1 Academy projects
- Promoting the sport in emerging markets without heavy media demands
In a Formula 1 era increasingly driven by cameras, controversy, and constant soundbites, Kimi Räikkönen remains—as always—the exception to the rule.
He may never hold a microphone in the Sky F1 booth, but his voice still carries weight. And if FOM is smart, they’ll give The Iceman a quiet but meaningful seat at the table.
“You don’t need to talk a lot to say something important,” Kimi once said.
And once again, he’s proven it.
