In a rare but deeply moving public appearance, Kimi Räikkönen, the famously reserved Formula 1 World Champion known as “The Iceman”, stepped up to the podium tonight to accept the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) — and in doing so, delivered a heartfelt speech that stunned and touched everyone in the room.
The ceremony, held at the FIA’s annual honours gala in Geneva, saw the 2007 Formula 1 World Champion recognized for his exceptional career, lasting impact on motorsport, and status as a fan favourite across generations.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem presented the award, describing Räikkönen as:
“A fearless driver, a rare talent, and a personality that has transcended sport. Kimi Räikkönen didn’t just race — he defined an era.”
Räikkönen, who retired from Formula 1 in 2021 after 349 Grand Prix starts, 21 victories, and countless memorable moments, was visibly moved as he took the stage to accept the honour.
Known for his laconic style and “leave me alone, I know what I’m doing” attitude, Kimi surprised many by giving a longer-than-usual — and unusually emotional — speech.
“First of all, I want to thank my family — my wife Minttu, my kids Robin and Rianna — you’ve been my pit crew off the track. I wasn’t always easy, but you were always there,” he said.
“And to the fans… I never said much, but I always heard you. I saw the banners, I read the messages, and you followed me everywhere. From Sauber to Ferrari, from McLaren to Alfa… you gave me more than I gave back. So, thank you.”
The audience, including legends like Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, and Charles Leclerc, gave Kimi a standing ovation as he nodded stoically and walked off the stage — characteristically brief, but full of gratitude.
A Career That Spoke Louder Than Words
Räikkönen remains one of the most beloved drivers in F1 history. His key milestones include:
- 2007 F1 World Champion with Ferrari
- 21 career wins and 103 podiums
- Fastest lap record holder in multiple seasons
- The longest racing career in F1 (2001–2021) at the time of retirement
- Revered for his pure racing spirit and refusal to play politics
But more than just his results, Kimi is remembered for being authentically himself — unfiltered, unpredictable, and utterly unforgettable.
Tributes and reactions from fans and fellow drivers poured in immediately:
- Sebastian Vettel: “Kimi always raced with his heart. One of a kind. Happy to call him a friend.”
- Charles Leclerc: “An honour to race with and learn from a legend. Congratulations, Kimi!”
- Jenson Button: “He said more tonight than in a decade! Jokes aside — well earned, mate.”
Though he has retired from F1, Räikkönen remains active in motorsport, occasionally competing in rally events, mentoring young drivers, and even recently helping his son Robin in karting — sparking hopes of another Räikkönen in the racing world soon.
As the evening closed, a massive screen replayed his most iconic F1 moments — from his title-clinching win in Brazil 2007 to his dry, legendary one-liners in the paddock.
And while Kimi may have left the track, tonight’s honour confirmed what fans already knew:
Legends don’t retire. They just live forever in racing history.
