In a rare and candid moment, Formula 1 icon Kimi “The Iceman” Räikkönen has offered his first public verdict on rising motorsport talent Kimi Antonelli, the young Italian driver seen by many as a future star of the sport — and perhaps the spiritual successor to Räikkönen himself.
Speaking during an appearance at a motorsport charity event in Finland, the famously stoic 2007 World Champion broke his silence with trademark dry wit and quiet admiration.
“He’s got the speed,” Räikkönen said of Antonelli, “but now let’s see if he has the ice.”
Kimi Antonelli, just 18 years old, is making waves in the Formula 2 championship and is heavily rumored to be joining Mercedes or Williams next season. With a name that evokes F1 royalty and talent that’s already drawn comparisons to past greats, fans and pundits alike have been eager to hear what the original “Kimi” thinks of the youngster who shares his name.
“It’s weird hearing my name on the radio again,” Räikkönen quipped. “Especially when it’s not about me getting penalties.”
What made Kimi Räikkönen one of the sport’s most beloved drivers wasn’t just his blistering pace — it was his cool-headed composure under pressure, earning him the nickname “The Iceman.”
Asked if he sees that same mindset in Antonelli, Räikkönen was cautious but honest:
“He’s calm. That’s good. Doesn’t talk too much. That’s better,” he said, cracking a grin.
“But pressure in F1 is different. You can’t teach it. You either melt… or stay frozen.”
Räikkönen, now retired from racing but active in karting development and mentoring his son Robin’s junior career, said he hasn’t spoken directly with Antonelli yet — but doesn’t rule it out.
“I’ve seen him race. He’s sharp. Doesn’t waste time. Reminds me of a few guys from my early days. Maybe we’ll talk at some point — if he’s not too busy being famous,” he added dryly.
The motorsport world lit up at the sight of Kimi commenting on Kimi. Social media was quick to capture the moment:
- “When Iceman meets the Future — chills.”
- “Räikkönen giving Antonelli the cold stamp of approval is everything.”
- “From Kimi to Kimi — we’re in good hands.”
As Antonelli prepares for what many believe will be his F1 debut in 2026, having the original “Kimi” watching from the shadows adds a poetic layer of pressure and promise.
Whether he lives up to the legacy that comes with the name remains to be seen — but if Räikkönen’s verdict is anything to go by, Antonelli is already on the right track.
“Everyone wants to be fast,” Räikkönen concluded.
“But F1’s a long race. Let’s see if he stays cool till the end.”
