Rising Formula 2 star and Mercedes junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli recently shared a candid and humorous story about meeting one of his childhood idols — the famously stoic Kimi Räikkönen — and it left fans with the kind of anecdote only “The Iceman” could inspire.
Speaking to Italian media during a press event at Monza ahead of the F2 round, Antonelli opened up about the moment he finally met the 2007 Formula 1 World Champion, who had long been a source of inspiration throughout his early racing career.
“I finally met Kimi Räikkönen not too long ago,” Antonelli said with a grin. “And I instantly understood why they call him ‘The Iceman.’”
Antonelli, just 18 years old and hailed as one of the brightest young talents in motorsport, had looked up to Räikkönen since his karting days. With both sharing the name “Kimi” — a coincidence not lost on fans — Antonelli had always dreamed of meeting the Finnish legend. But when the moment arrived, it played out in true Räikkönen fashion.
“I went up to him full of excitement,” Antonelli recounted. “I introduced myself, thanked him for inspiring me, and told him I was proud to share the name ‘Kimi’ with him. He looked at me, nodded once, and said, ‘Good. Keep it cool.’”
The room burst into laughter as Antonelli mimicked Räikkönen’s famously dry delivery.
“That was it — no smile, no extra words. Just classic Kimi. I didn’t know whether to laugh or salute him.”
While the exchange was brief, it left a lasting impression on Antonelli.
“He doesn’t need many words. There’s something about him — his presence, his calmness. You feel like you’re standing next to someone who’s been through everything in racing and still doesn’t care about the fuss. That’s cool to me. Really cool.”
Now climbing the ranks of the motorsport world with Mercedes’ full backing, Antonelli says that Räikkönen’s style — on and off the track — continues to influence him.
“He raced his way. He wasn’t trying to be anyone else, and that’s something I really admire. In this sport, that kind of individuality is rare.”
The story instantly lit up social media, with hashtags like #IcemanVibes, #KimiMeetsKimi, and #AntonelliOnRaikkonen trending among F1 fans. Many noted the poetic full circle — the next-generation “Kimi” meeting the original, both cool in their own way, and both destined to leave a mark on motorsport.
When asked later in the paddock about meeting Antonelli, Kimi Räikkönen reportedly replied:
“He’s fast. That’s good. That’s what matters.”
No further comment. Of course.
