Teenage racing sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli recently opened up about meeting one of his childhood idols, 2007 Formula 1 World Champion Kimi Räikkönen—and the experience left a lasting impression.
“He’s a really cool guy,” Antonelli said in a recent interview. “I finally understood why they call him The Iceman.”
The 17-year-old Italian, considered one of the most promising drivers in Mercedes’ talent pipeline, met the famously stoic Finn during a motorsport event earlier this year. While the meeting was brief, it left Antonelli both amused and inspired.
A Meeting of Two Kimi’s
Sharing a first name and a love for speed, Antonelli said he grew up watching Räikkönen’s races and admired his calm demeanor under pressure. But it wasn’t until they spoke that he truly appreciated the nickname.
“He doesn’t talk much, but when he does, it’s sharp, straight to the point, and kind of hilarious in its own way,” Antonelli revealed. “He has this cold but cool vibe. You can see he’s seen everything in racing—and nothing surprises him anymore.”
An Influence Beyond the Track
While many young drivers cite Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen as role models, Antonelli has often highlighted Räikkönen for his pure love of racing and no-nonsense attitude.
“He reminds us that racing can still be about instinct and honesty, not just politics and media,” Antonelli added. “You meet him and realize—he’s exactly the way you imagine. And that’s rare.”
The Future Watching the Past
As Antonelli climbs the ranks of junior formula with hopes of reaching F1 soon, the short exchange with the former Ferrari and Alfa Romeo driver clearly meant more than just a photo op.
“He told me something simple: ‘Drive fast and don’t listen to too much crap.’ That’s classic Kimi—and I’ll take that advice any day.”
Whether Antonelli reaches the heights of his namesake remains to be seen. But one thing is certain — The Iceman made a lasting impression on the next generation of speed.
