Vanessa Bryant Reaches $28.85 Million Settlement Over Kobe Bryant Crash Photos
Vanessa Bryant has secured a $28.85 million settlement with Los Angeles County, concluding her legal battle over the unauthorized sharing of graphic photos from the 2020 helicopter crash that claimed the lives of her husband, NBA legend Kobe Bryant, their daughter Gianna, and seven others.

The settlement encompasses the $15 million awarded to Bryant by a federal jury in August 2022 for emotional distress and invasion of privacy, along with an additional $13.5 million to resolve any future claims by Bryant and her three surviving daughters: Natalia, Bianka, and Capri.
The lawsuit stemmed from revelations that first responders, including deputies and firefighters, had taken and shared unauthorized photos of the crash scene, displaying them at social gatherings and among colleagues.
In a statement, Bryant’s attorney, Luis Li, remarked, “Today marks the successful culmination of Mrs. Bryant’s courageous battle to hold accountable those who engaged in this grotesque conduct.”
The settlement also resolves related issues pending in state court and covers legal costs.
Bryant has previously stated that proceeds from the lawsuit will be donated to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, which supports underserved athletes and honors the legacy of Kobe and Gianna Bryant.
This case has highlighted the importance of privacy rights and the need for accountability among first responders. It has also led to legislative changes in California, making it a misdemeanor for first responders to take unauthorized photos of deceased individuals at crime or accident scenes.

The settlement serves as a reminder of the profound impact that violations of privacy can have on grieving families and underscores the necessity of ethical conduct by those entrusted with public safety.
