James Harden’s $36M Decision Could Complicate Clippers’ Future After Kawhi Leonard’s Admission
James Harden’s upcoming decision regarding his $36.4 million player option for the 2025–26 NBA season is set to play a major role in shaping the future of the Los Angeles Clippers. Following a disappointing Game 7 loss to the Denver Nuggets, where Harden scored only 7 points but added 13 assists, concerns about his postseason performance have intensified. His teams have now lost 11 of the last 13 elimination games he’s played in—raising questions about his playoff reliability.

Compounding the uncertainty is Kawhi Leonard’s recent admission that he extended his contract in January 2024 expecting both Harden and Paul George to remain on the team. However, with George departing to join the Philadelphia 76ers, Leonard and Harden remain the core of a team with high aspirations but limited results. Leonard has maintained confidence in Harden, citing strong communication and a shared goal of winning. When both were healthy, the Clippers posted a promising 43–22 record.
Still, Harden’s decision looms large. If he declines the player option in favor of a long-term deal, the Clippers’ financial flexibility will be tested. The team is already over the second luxury tax apron, which severely restricts roster maneuverability under the NBA’s new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Kawhi’s willingness to take a pay cut could inspire Harden to consider a similar sacrifice, but that remains uncertain.

With head coach Tyronn Lue recently signing a five-year extension, the Clippers appear committed to continuity. But without clarity on Harden’s status, their championship window remains clouded. If he stays, the pressure to win will intensify. If he leaves, the Clippers may be forced to reshape their roster once again—leaving Leonard’s title hopes hanging in the balance.
