Tennessee Football Misses on Another Wide Receiver in the NCAA Transfer Portal
Tennessee football continues to face significant challenges in replenishing its wide receiver corps following a wave of departures through the NCAA transfer portal during the 2024–25 offseason. The Volunteers have now missed out on yet another key transfer target, adding to a growing list of setbacks at the position.

The most notable loss came when standout slot receiver Squirrel White entered the portal and committed to Florida State. White, who was expected to be a cornerstone of the offense, finished his junior year with 34 receptions for 381 yards and two touchdowns despite battling injuries. His departure leaves a considerable gap in Tennessee’s passing game, as he ranked seventh in program history in career receptions with 131.
In addition to White, receivers Chas Nimrod, Nathan Leacock, and Nate Spillman also exited the program, either seeking more playing time or new opportunities. Combined with the graduation of Bru McCoy and Dont’e Thornton Jr., Tennessee is left with a severely depleted receiving unit.
To make matters worse, the Vols have been unable to land adequate replacements in the portal, raising concerns about their offensive firepower heading into the 2025 season. So far, the only scholarship receivers on the roster include Chris Brazzell II, Braylon Staley, and a group of incoming freshmen—none of whom have established themselves as reliable targets.
Wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope has traditionally preferred developing young talent over aggressively pursuing transfers. However, with depth concerns mounting, the coaching staff may need to shift strategy and actively pursue experienced options to stabilize the offense.

Tennessee’s inability to secure needed reinforcements could significantly impact their competitiveness in the SEC this fall. With spring practice concluded and fall camp approaching, the pressure is on to find answers before the season opener.
