Mark Pope Outlines Vision for Kentucky Star Otega Oweh Amid NBA Draft Decision
Kentucky head coach Mark Pope has laid out his plans for standout guard Otega Oweh as the Wildcats wait to see whether the rising star will return for the 2025–26 season or remain in the NBA Draft. Oweh, who transferred from Oklahoma and made a major impact last season, is currently testing the draft waters while maintaining his college eligibility. He has until May 28 to decide whether to withdraw and come back to Lexington.

Pope is optimistic about Oweh’s potential but believes another year at Kentucky could elevate his NBA stock significantly. “A lot of Otega’s heart is back here at Kentucky,” Pope said, highlighting Oweh’s strong connection to the program. The head coach emphasized that continued development—especially in three-point shooting—could position Oweh for a much higher selection in next year’s draft.
Oweh averaged an impressive 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game last season, becoming a key contributor on both ends of the floor. His performance has drawn the attention of NBA scouts, earning him an invitation to the 2025 NBA Draft Combine, taking place May 11–18 in Chicago. His showing there could heavily influence his final decision.
If Oweh returns to Kentucky, he’s expected to be the centerpiece of Pope’s roster, which includes high-profile additions like transfers Jaland Lowe and Denzel Aberdeen, and five-star recruit Jasper Johnson. Oweh would likely earn preseason All-American honors and be in the conversation for SEC Player of the Year.

Pope’s plan reflects a strong belief in Oweh’s potential—not just as an NBA talent, but as a leader capable of guiding Kentucky deep into the postseason. The next few weeks will be critical as Oweh weighs his future and considers one more season in blue and white.
