From the Brink of Dismissal to the College Football Playoff: Steve Sarkisian’s Remarkable Journey
In 2015, Steve Sarkisian’s coaching career faced a significant setback when he was dismissed from his position as head coach at USC due to personal challenges. Reflecting on that period, Sarkisian admitted he couldn’t envision a path leading him to the College Football Playoff (CFP). However, in a testament to resilience and determination, Sarkisian has not only revived his career but also led the Texas Longhorns to a coveted spot in the CFP.
After his departure from USC, Sarkisian took time to address his personal issues and gradually returned to the coaching realm. He served as an offensive analyst for Alabama before being promoted to offensive coordinator, where his innovative strategies garnered national attention. In January 2021, the University of Texas recognized his offensive acumen and leadership potential, appointing him as the head coach of the Longhorns.
Sarkisian’s tenure at Texas began with challenges, including a 5–7 record in his first season. Despite these hurdles, he remained steadfast in his vision for the program. His perseverance bore fruit as the Longhorns demonstrated significant improvement in subsequent seasons. The 2023 season was particularly noteworthy, with Texas finishing the regular season 11–1, securing the Big 12 Championship, and earning a spot in the College Football Playoff.
This achievement is monumental for both Sarkisian and the Texas football program. It marks the Longhorns’ first appearance in the CFP, signaling a return to national prominence. For Sarkisian, it’s a personal and professional triumph, showcasing his ability to overcome past adversities and lead a team to the pinnacle of college football.
Reflecting on his journey, Sarkisian expressed profound gratitude and humility.
