MotoGP icon Giacomo Agostini recently shared his thoughts on Marc Márquez’s move to Gresini Ducati, raising questions about Márquez’s chances in the upcoming 2024 season. After leaving Honda, Márquez now joins a satellite team rather than a factory-supported one. Agostini expressed doubts about the 30-year-old’s ability to regain his championship-winning form without an official factory bike, as private teams often lack the resources of larger outfits like Ducati’s factory team. Agostini noted that while Márquez’s skill remains extraordinary, competing with riders on fully-supported machines will be challenging.
Despite the difficulties, Agostini acknowledged Márquez’s resilience, recalling how the Spaniard pushed Honda’s struggling bike to impressive finishes. Agostini emphasized that Márquez’s competitive spirit is undiminished, though he urged caution regarding championship hopes, noting that Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin, who ride factory Ducatis, are strong favorites.
The coming season is critical for Márquez, who will need time to adapt to the Ducati Desmosedici. Agostini believes that if Márquez can quickly adjust, he may contend for wins, although winning the championship remains a long shot. The Italian legend concluded that this move will test Márquez’s legacy, as he aims to prove he can still dominate—despite the odds.
