In a candid conversation on Club Shay Shay with Shannon Sharpe, rapper Fat Joe revealed that a major sneaker deal with Michael Jordan fell apart due to his past feud with fellow rapper 50 Cent. According to Fat Joe, he was set to sign a historic $20 million deal, making him the first rapper with his own Jordan sneaker line—years before Travis Scott would achieve the same.
The trouble stemmed from the infamous hip-hop feud between 50 Cent and Ja Rule, a rivalry that Fat Joe became tangled in after collaborating with Ja Rule on multiple tracks. 50 Cent, who openly clashed with Ja Rule, soon directed his energy at anyone affiliated with him, including Fat Joe. The feud led to some of hip-hop’s most memorable clashes, but it came at a personal cost for Joe when it spilled into his business aspirations.
Fat Joe recalled how Michael Jordan, a legendary but notoriously controversy-averse figure, directly reached out. “He called me Big Joe. He said, ‘Big Joe, you know I don’t like controversy,’” the rapper explained on the podcast. “Maybe in the future. I was there, and the feud ruined a lot of my money.”
While Joe and 50 Cent have since reconciled, with their feud largely in the past, the fallout remains. The sneaker line would have been a groundbreaking moment, not only for Joe’s career but for hip-hop and sneaker culture as a whole. By pulling the plug, Jordan likely aimed to avoid alienating 50 Cent’s fans, especially on the West Coast.
In retrospect, this missed opportunity highlights how deep the rifts in hip-hop can run, with industry feuds impacting more than just personal relationships—often costing millions in deals and influencing cultural shifts.
